East Ridge at Cutler Bay boasts a library with an extensive collection of books available for avid readers in the Life Plan Community and was a perfect spot to celebrate National Read a Book Day this month.
National Read a Book Day calls on book lovers to indulge in their favorite hobby. The maintenance-free lifestyle of East Ridge complements this pastime by offering residents more time to pursue their love of reading while not worrying about cleaning or cooking.
While residents may not tackle the goal of reading a book in one day, the East Ridge library may be a perfect gathering spot for the community’s book lovers.
Open each day and staffed by volunteers, the East Ridge library offers residents both fiction and nonfiction books as well as large-type fiction books. Books, excluding some of the library’s oversize books and irreplaceable first editions, can be taken home to be enjoyed on an honor system.
Separate rooms are designated for either fiction or nonfiction books, and the library also offers meeting space, computer workstations and an expansive back patio for outdoor reading and relaxing.
The nonfiction books are arranged by the Dewey Decimal System and include biographies, memoirs, history, hobbies and general interest, while the fiction books are arranged by author.
Devoted volunteers help in the library, replacing returned books to the stacks and assisting residents with selections.
While some of the books in the East Ridge library have come from donations, the library buys new books each month, and these newest acquisitions are displayed in the front room. To make room for new acquisitions, books are sold either at the annual Christmas in July sale or the Holiday Bazaar. Monies raised are contributed to the book fund.
Many library volunteers are also members of the East Ridge Persnickety Book Group that has been in existence for nearly 15 years. The library offers a perfect spot for their book discussions. Residents select a monthly book to read, and while typically fiction, they have also read memoirs, biographies and some historical work.
The East Ridge library is also supplemented by the regular visits of the Miami-Dade County mobile library that visits East Ridge every Monday and supplies multiple copies of a book the Persnickety Book Group members wish to read.
Visiting the East Ridge library is part of a community tour provided by the community’s Marketing Department. If you would like to visit East Ridge, please call 305-290-2346, and the Marketing Department will be happy to provide a tour.
