Award-winning Naples artist Jen Norqual, owner of Docks by Jen, shares her expertise and love of the arts with residents at The Terraces at Bonita Springs during monthly sessions of “Cocktails & Canvas.” Gaining in popularity, independent living and assistant living residents look forward to the opportunity for self-expression and creativity as Jen provides an example for the artists to follow, encouraging them to add their own flair and creativity. One resident said that she already has a gallery wall in her apartment displaying the paintings she has completed thus far. The artists also enjoy a light splash of Sangria to add the “cocktail” component to the event!

Studies from the American Association of Art Therapy indicate that for seniors, creating art has tremendous benefits:

Increases cognitive skills and intellectual stimulation. By creating art, aging individuals have an opportunity to expand their minds and look at things in a way they might not normally consider. For those dealing with memory loss, the simple act of creating may stimulate the senses and trigger long-forgotten memories.

Improves physical/motor skills and alleviates pain. Creating artwork helps improve coordination through small, purposeful movements, leading to less pain and even an enhanced immune system.

Encourages socialization and communication. Art allows for an alternate means of connecting with others, helping to lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation many seniors may face.

Relieves stress and depression. Creating art allows for an open expression of feelings, which can help relieve stress, anxiety and confusion.

Promotes self-awareness and self-expression. Expressing oneself through art can be a powerful, meaningful way to share our lives with others.

The blossoming artists at The Terraces at Bonita Springs are definitely benefiting from the experience!
