July at East Ridge means keeping the community’s tradition for the Christmas in July sale. This year, the sale took place on Friday, July 23, and the public was invited.
“We’re so excited to have the sale this summer. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talents and abilities of our residents,” said Fran Plummer, one of the volunteers of the event. “We are thrilled to be able to invite the public and take advantage of an opportunity to let them know East Ridge has reopened.”
The Christmas in July sale was one of the major fundraising efforts organized by residents, and proceeds were used to benefit the community.
This year, the sale also included a farmers’ market organized by the East Ridge Dining Services Director Miguel Parks. Fresh produce with locally grown vegetables and fruit as well as honey were sold.
“Our residents and associates really enjoy the ability to buy farm-fresh produce, and Miguel organizes these several times a year,” Fran explained. “It’s great to have the farmers’ market be part of our Christmas in July sale.”
New merchandise included hanging pots with macrame holders made by the community’s ceramic class participants. These were filled with plants from the community’s Garden Center.
Handmade crafts that also had been made by residents – the Village Crafters – include holiday pillows, Christmas ornaments and wreaths, beaded jewelry, decorated magnets, placemats and more.
“Many of the items we sell have been created from recycled merchandise from the East Ridge Thrift store,” Fran said. “We keep an eye out for things that are donated and see how something can be repurposed into something special. It’s very gratifying for our residents to know they have an outlet to sell their creations while benefiting East Ridge.”
Fran is well known for her peacock feather wreaths and hatbands that quickly sell out. Since many peacocks wander around East Ridge, her neighbors help her collect their feathers. She’ll make 20–25 wreaths each season, and residents want her creations for their front doors and to give as gifts.
The crafters at East Ridge make use of the Lifestyles Center’s ample craft room as well as take their projects home to complete.
There will be a Christmas bazaar in early December that also is an East Ridge tradition.
“As soon as this sale concludes, we start crafting for the December sale,” Fran added.
